Milk: A Favorite Food of the Holy Prophet ﷺ

Milk is one of the best foods for human beings. Allah Almighty has made it full of nourishment. Its importance can be understood from the fact that when a human is born — weak and without physical strength — Allah Almighty has chosen milk as their very first source of nourishment. To support the child’s growth and energy, Allah Almighty has commanded mothers to nurse for up to two years. Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an: وَ الْوَالِدٰتُ یُرْضِعْنَ اَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَیْنِ كَامِلَیْنِ لِمَنْ اَرَادَ اَنْ یُّتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَة “And mothers should suckle their babies for two complete years; for those who wish to complete the period of suckling.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:233) Nursing for two years is not obligatory; if it is harmful for the child, weaning earlier is permissible. The point here is to highlight that Allah Almighty chose milk as the first food for a human being. Milk is a blessing from Allah Almighty. In the Qur’an, while describing the blessings of Paradise, Allah Almighty mentions milk: وَ اَنْهٰرٌ مِّنْ لَّبَنٍ لَّمْ یَتَغَیَّرْ طَعْمُه “And rivers of milk the taste of which did not change.” (Surah Muhammad, 47:15) This shows that Allah Almighty has created rivers of milk in Paradise — and everything in Paradise is a divine blessing. On the night of Mi'raj, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ was presented with two vessels — one containing milk, the other wine. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ chose the milk. He ﷺ himself described this event: فَأُتِيتُ بِإِنَاءَيْنِ فِي أَحَدِهِمَا لَبَنٌ، وَفِي الْآخَرِ خَمْرٌ، فَقِيلَ لِي: خُذْ أَيَّهُمَا شِئْتَ، فَأَخَذْتُ اللَّبَنَ، فَشَرِبْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: هُدِيتَ الْفِطْرَةَ - - أَمَّا إِنَّكَ لَوْ أَخَذْتَ الْخَمْرَ غَوَتْ أُمَّتُكَ “Two vessels were brought to me, one containing milk and the other wine. I was told, ‘Choose whichever you wish.’ So I chose the milk and drank it. I was told, ‘You have chosen the natural way (fitrah). Had you chosen the wine, your Ummah would have gone astray.’” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 168)

The Holy Prophet ﷺ Would Drink Milk When It Was Presented

When milk was presented to the Prophet of Mercy ﷺ, he would not only accept it but also drink it. It is narrated in both Bukhari and Muslim: Narrated by Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith: Some people were discussing in her presence on the Day of ‘Arafah whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was fasting or not. Some said, "He is fasting," while others said, "He is not fasting." So Umm al-Fadl sent him a cup of milk while he was standing on his camel at ‘Arafah, and he ﷺ drank it. (Muttafaqun ‘alayh – agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim)** Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Naeemi رحمه الله, commenting on this hadith, stated: Umm al-Fadl رضی اللہ عنہا sent milk to the Messenger ﷺ because she knew that he ﷺ liked it very much. (Mir’at al-Manajih, Vol. 3, Hadith 2042)

A Gift of Milk Should Not Be Refused

When milk is offered as a gift, it should be accepted. There is a Hadith of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ: عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ ﷺ: :ثَلَاثٌ لَا تُرَدُّ الْوَسَائِدُ وَالدُّهْنُ وَاللَّبَنُ Narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضی اللہ عنہ: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are three things that should not be refused: cushions, oil, and milk." (Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 3029)

The Reward of Gifting Milk Is Equal to Freeing a Slave

It is narrated that Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib رضی اللہ عنہ said: سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّٰہِ ﷺ یَقُوْلُ: مَنْ مَنَحَ مَنِیْحَةَ لَبَنٍ أَوْوَرِقٍ أَوْهَدَی زُقَاقًا کَانَ لَهُ مِثْلَ عِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever gives a donation of milk, or lends silver, or guides someone along a path — will receive a reward equal to that of freeing a slave.” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1957)

Milk Is the Best Food

Milk is a food that fulfills the need for both nourishment and hydration. It is mentioned in a Hadith: وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ ﷺ: وَإِذَا سَقٰی لَبَنًا فَلْيَقُلْ: اَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهٗ لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ إِلَّا اللَّبَنُ Narrated by Ibn Abbas رضی اللہ عنہ: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When any of you drinks milk, let him say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it,’ for there is nothing that suffices in place of both food and drink except milk.” (Mirqat al-Mafatih, Hadith 4283) Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Naeemi رحمه الله, commenting on this hadith, said: “Only milk contains the unique quality of removing both hunger and thirst. Therefore, it serves as both food and drink.” (Mir’at al-Manajih, Hadith 4283)

Milk Is the Best Gift

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: عَنْ اَبِی مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَال: قَالَ رَسُوۡلُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: اَرْبَعُوۡنَ خَصْلَةً اَعْلَاهَا مَنِيۡحَةُ الْعَنْزِ، مَامِنْ عَامِلٍ يَعْمَلُ بِخَصْلَةٍ مِنْهَارَجَاءَ ثَوَابِهَا وَتَصْدِيۡقَ مَوْعُوۡدِهَا اِلَّا اَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ “There are forty virtuous deeds, the highest of which is to lend a milk-giving goat to someone. Whoever practices any of these deeds, hoping for its reward and believing in its promise, Allah will admit him to Paradise because of it.” (Hadith source: Musnad Ahmad and others)

The Scientific and Medical Benefits of Milk

• It is permissible to drink the milk of animals that are halal, such as cows, goats, camels, buffalo, etc. • Milk is a treasure trove of benefits, and a few of them are mentioned below: Better Sleep: Drinking milk promotes good sleep. When consumed at night, especially during winter, it helps relieve fatigue and induces restful sleep. In earlier times, people used to rely more on milk, but over time, with modern development, people have shifted toward caffeine-based drinks like tea and coffee. If we replace tea with milk, it leads to improved sleep, better health, and mental calmness. Therefore, to enjoy peaceful and deep sleep, one should make a habit of drinking milk at night. Weight Loss: Milk helps in reducing weight. Many people wish to lose excess weight, and milk can be a good option for them. Drinking milk before sleeping at night can aid this process. It is rich in protein and fiber, which fulfill the body's nutritional needs. To lose weight, it is important to maintain balanced sugar levels — and the protein found in milk helps regulate blood sugar and supports weight loss. Stronger Bones: Milk contains a good amount of Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium — essential for strong bones. It is particularly beneficial in preventing osteoporosis. By consuming milk, we can protect ourselves from many illnesses. However, if someone is already suffering from a health condition, they should consult a doctor immediately. Proteins and Vitamins: Milk is an excellent source of proteins and vitamins, including Vitamin B12, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. After a mother’s milk, the most beneficial milk for humans is goat’s milk, followed by cow’s milk and then camel’s milk. Additional Benefits: • Improves skin complexion • Reduces mental stress • Provides long-lasting energy • Lowers cholesterol levels • Strengthens veins and muscles

The Beloved Prophet's ﷺ consumption of meat

The Beloved Prophet's ﷺ consumption of meat

Among the countless blessings of Allah Almighty is the blessing of meat. Allah Almighty has clearly explained which animals’ meat is permissible (halal) to eat and which are forbidden. Regarding the purpose behind the creation of livestock, Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an: اَللّٰهُ الَّذِیْ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَنْعَامَ لِتَرْكَبُوْا مِنْهَا وَ مِنْهَا تَاْكُلُوْن "It is Allah Who created the animals for you that you ride some of them, and eat the meat of some." (Surah Al-Mu’min, 24:79) In Paradise as well, Allah Almighty will grant the people of Jannah the meat they desire. He says: وَ اَمْدَدْنٰهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ وَّ لَحْمٍ مِّمَّا یَشْتَهُوْنَ "And We helped them with fruit and meat, as they desire." (Surah At-Tur, 27:22) And: وَ لَحْمِ طَیْرٍ مِّمَّا یَشْتَهُوْنَ "And the meat of birds that they may wish." (Surah Al-Waqi‘ah, 27:21) The Holy Qur’an also mentions the meat of fish: وَ هُوَ الَّذِیْ سَخَّرَ الْبَحْرَ لِتَاْكُلُوْا مِنْهُ لَحْمًا طَرِیًّا "And it is He Who made the sea subservient to you; that eat fresh meat (fish) from it." (Surah An-Nahl, 14:14) The Noble Prophet ﷺ described meat as the chief of all foods. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Meat is the leader of the foods of the people of this world and the people of Paradise." The olive tree is rich in blessings, offering numerous benefits. Its oil, known as zayt, produces a very pure and clean light. It is applied to the head and also eaten with bread as a substitute for curry. No other oil in the world shares these qualities. The leaves of the olive tree do not fall. It grows in a region that is neither too hot nor too cold. Instead, it grows in the land of Shaam (Greater Syria), where it is safe from the extremes of heat and cold. The tree is of excellent quality, and its fruit is extremely balanced. (Reference: Tafsir Sirat al-Jinan, Para 18, Surah al-Nur, under Ayah 35) In the Holy Qur’an, Allah Almighty mentions the olive tree: یُّوْقَدُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُّبٰرَكَةٍ زَیْتُوْنَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِیَّةٍ وَّ لَا غَرْبِیَّةٍ "Kindled by the blessed olive tree, which is neither of the East nor of the West." (Surah al-Nur, Ayah 35, Para 18) At another place, Allah Almighty beautifully mentions the olive: وَ شَجَرَةً تَخْرُ جُ مِنْ طُوْرِ سَیْنَآءَ تَنْۢبُتُ بِالدُّهْنِ وَ صِبْغٍ لِّلْاٰكِلِیْنَ "And created the (olive) tree that comes forth from Mount Sinai, which grows containing oil and gravy for the eaters." (Surah al-Mu’minun, Ayah 20, Para 18) Under this verse, the commentary says: Allah Almighty created the olive tree, which grows on Mount Sinai. It produces oil, which is also used as a kind of curry by those who eat it. It has amazing qualities: it provides oil whose benefits include lighting lamps, being used as a medicine, and also serving as food — one can eat bread with it alone. (Reference: Tafsir Sirat al-Jinan) The Noble Prophet ﷺ said about olives: كُلُوا الزَّيْتَ وَادَّهِنُوا بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ “Eat the olive and apply its oil, for it is from a blessed tree.” (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1851) There is also healing in olives for illnesses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to treat pleurisy with sea costus (Qust al-Bahri) and olive oil. (Sunan Abi Dawud) Under this Hadith, Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Naeemi رحمه الله explains: This means mixing Qust al-Bahri into olive oil and applying it to the painful area, letting the patient eat the oil, and massaging them with it as well. It is mentioned in the Hadith that: “Eat the oil and apply it, for it is from a blessed tree and contains healing for seventy diseases, including leprosy and hemorrhoids.” (Reference: Mirqat al-Mafatih Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 4535)

The Beloved Prophet’s ﷺ Use of Olive

The Beloved Prophet ﷺ ate olives with bread and made du‘a for the companion who served them. It is mentioned in the Hadith: عَنْ اَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: اَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ جَاءَ اِلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَجَاءَ بِخُبْزٍ وَزَيْتٍ فَاَكَلَ ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: اَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَاَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الْاَبرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه: The Holy Prophet ﷺ came to Sayyiduna Saad bin ‘Ubadah (RA), and he brought bread and olives. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ ate from it and then said, “Those who were fasting have broken their fast with you, the righteous have eaten your food, and the angels have supplicated for mercy for you.” (Faizan-e-Riyad al-Salihin, Hadith 1267)

The Medicinal and Scientific Benefits of Olive

The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said that olives contain healing for seventy diseases, and medical experts today are now describing the benefits of olives in detail. A few of them are mentioned below: 1. Raw consumption of olive oil is more beneficial and helps reduce cholesterol. Therefore, olive oil should be used uncooked. There’s no unpleasant taste in eating it raw—add a spoonful of olive oil to your plate of rice or curry while eating and enjoy it. 2. Massaging the scalp daily with olive oil helps open clogged pores and encourages hair growth, especially in cases of baldness. 3. Due to the presence of fatty acids, vitamins, and other nutrients, olive oil is highly beneficial for health. 4. Olive oil helps in reducing obesity. 5. Drinking one spoonful of olive oil on an empty stomach protects the body’s cells from damage that can lead to cancer. 6. Olive oil supports the digestive system and helps relieve constipation. 7. The fatty acids present in olive oil help enhance the function of the immune system, making it easier to fight off seasonal illnesses. 8. There are two types of cholesterol — LDL (bad) and HDL (good). To prevent heart disease, it's important to lower LDL levels and raise HDL levels. One effective way to do this is by regularly consuming olive oil.

Vinegar

Vinegar – A Favorite Food of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

In Arabic, vinegar is called “الخلّ” (al-khall), and in English, it is called “vinegar.” Vinegar also holds the honor of being among the favorite foods of the Noble Prophet ﷺ. It is both a drink and a food rich in nutrition. Vinegar is an ancient food, made from grapes, sugarcane, jamun (black plum), apples, and similar fruits. Its use is not without benefits. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ referred to vinegar as the best curry, as mentioned in the hadith: عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: «نِعْمَ الْأُدُمُ الْخَلُّ Narrated by Sayyidatuna Aishah رضي الله عنها: The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “What an excellent curry vinegar is!” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2051) It is also said that a house in which vinegar is present will never experience poverty. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once came to Sayyidatuna Aishah رضي الله عنها while I was present with her. He asked, “Is there anything for lunch?” She replied, “We have bread, dates, and vinegar.” The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “What an excellent curry vinegar is! O Allah, bless vinegar. Indeed, it was the curry of the prophets before me. A household that has vinegar will never be poor.” (Sunan Ibn Mājah, Hadith 3318)

The Holy Prophet’s ﷺ Use of Vinegar

The Noble Prophet ﷺ used to consume vinegar with fondness, and this practice of his also reflected his simplicity. The following hadith highlights this: One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me by the hand and brought me to his home. Some pieces of bread were presented before him. He ﷺ asked, “Is there any curry?” They replied, “Nothing except vinegar.” The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: “Vinegar is an excellent curry.” Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه said: “From the moment I heard this from the Beloved Prophet ﷺ, I have loved vinegar ever since.” The narrator Ṭalḥah bin Nafiʿ رضي الله عنه said: “Since I heard this narration from Sayyiduna Jabir, I too have loved vinegar.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2052)

How Excellent a Curry Vinegar Is!

In Sahih Muslim, the hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه also includes the following words: فَدَعَا بِهِ، فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ بِهِ Translation: The Beloved Prophet ﷺ asked for the vinegar, and began eating with it, saying repeatedly, “How excellent a curry vinegar is.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2052) The Beloved Prophet ﷺ also consumed vinegar at the home of Sayyidatuna Umm Hani The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to my house and asked, “Do you have anything (to eat)?” I said, “Nothing except some dry pieces of bread and vinegar.” The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “Bring it. A house is never deprived of curry if it has vinegar in it.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1841)

The Scientific and Medical Benefits of Vinegar

Some of the well-known benefits of vinegar include: • Vinegar helps relieve stomach inflammation. • It quenches thirst. • It prevents the formation of inflammation/swelling in the body. • It aids in digestion. • It purifies the blood and helps eliminate boils and pimples. • When vinegar is heated and mixed with salt and then consumed, it helps cleanse the mouth. • Gargling with warm vinegar relieves toothache and strengthens the gums. • Drinking warm vinegar strengthens the stomach, increases physical strength, and enhances facial attractiveness.

Tharid – Bread Soaked in Meat Stew

Tharid – A Favorite Food of the Holy Prophet ﷺ

Tharid (ثرید) is a well-known and traditional dish in the Arabic language, made from meat, broth, and bread. In simple words, this dish can be described as “bread soaked in meat stew.” Tharid holds a special place in Islamic history and was among the favorite foods of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ. Rich in both flavor and benefits, Tharid has been part of people’s diets for thousands of years. It is mentioned in Mirqat al-Mafatih: وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ ثَرَدَ الثَّرِيدَ “The first to prepare Tharid was Prophet Ibrahim علیہ السّلام.” (Mirqāt al-Mafātīḥ, Bāb al-Tarajjul, under Hadith 4488) The great-grandfather of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ was famously known as Hashim, although his original name was ʿAmr. The reason for this nickname was that once he crumbled pieces of bread and mixed them into a broth of camel meat to make Tharid, and then generously fed the people. From that day onward, he became known as Hashim (the one who crumbles bread). This is mentioned in Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah: وأول من أطعم الثريد بمكة، وكان اسمه عمرا، وإنما سمي هاشم لذلك “He was the first to serve Tharid to the pilgrims in Makkah. His name was ʿAmr, and he was called Hashim because of this.” (Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah, Vol. 1, Page 151) Tharid is a blessed food. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Blessing is found in three things: in the congregation, in Tharid, and in Suhoor.” (Al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr by Ṭabarānī, Hadith 6127) The Holy Prophet ﷺ greatly loved Tharid. عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ أَحَبَّ الطَّعَامِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الثَّرِيدُ مِنَ الْخُبْزِ، وَالثَّرِيدُ مِنَ الحَيْسِ Narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: “The most beloved food to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was Tharid made from bread, and Tharid made from Hays (a mixture of dates and clarified butter).” (Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Hadith 3783)

The Noble Prophet ﷺ Eating Tharid

He then presented it in the court of the Noble Prophet ﷺ. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ and the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم ate from it. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “Eat, but do not break any bone.” When all had finished eating, the Holy Prophet ﷺ gathered the bones in one dish, placed his blessed hand upon them, and recited some words. Then a miracle occurred—the goat stood up alive, shaking its ears. (Mawahib al-Ladunniyyah, Vol. 7, p. 66) On another occasion, tharid was presented in the court of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ ate from it and at the same time imparted guidance. We began to eat from it, and I (Ikrash رضي الله عنه) started eating from different sides of the dish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘O Ikrash, eat from one place, for it is one type of food.’ Then a platter containing different varieties of dates was brought to us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved his hand around in the platter and said: ‘O Ikrash, eat from wherever you wish, for this is not of one kind.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3274)

The Noble Prophet ﷺ Inviting the People of Suffa

Sayyiduna Wathila bin Asqa رضي الله عنه narrates: Once, the People of Suffa complained of hunger and said to me, “Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and request food for us.” So I went to the court of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and presented their request. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ then asked Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidatuna Aisha Siddiqah رضي الله عنها if there was any food. She presented a few dry pieces of bread. Then the Holy Prophet ﷺ placed the bread into a large dish and, with his blessed hands, began to prepare tharid. Before long, the dish became filled with it. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ then said: “O Wathila! Go and bring ten of the Companions.” So I went and brought ten men, and they ate to their fill. Then another ten were called, and they too ate fully. This continued three more times until all had eaten, while the dish remained just as full as it was at the beginning. Finally, the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “O Wathila, take it back to Aisha.” (Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Tabarani, Bab al-Waw, Hadith 208)

The Medical and Scientific Benefits of Tharid

Just as all the favorite foods of the Holy Prophet ﷺ have numerous medical benefits, Tharid too possesses many health advantages. A few of them are mentioned here. It is important to note that these benefits are mentioned only to help us recognize the value of these foods — otherwise, the true objective is to follow the way of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Just as the noble Companions would emulate the Holy Prophet ﷺ in every aspect of his life, we too should adopt his blessed practices in our daily lives. This is not only a sign of love but also a requirement of the Shari’ah. Some of the health benefits of Tharid include: • It is easy to digest. • The soaked bread pieces are very beneficial for the stomach and digestive system. • It strengthens the body and nerves, because Tharid contains both bread and meat, which are nourishing ingredients. Therefore, we should eat Tharid and honor our respected guests by serving them Tharid as well. In doing so, we will be following a Sunnah and also gaining the benefits mentioned above.

Sattu – a roasted barley drink

Sattu – one of the favorite foods of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

Sattu is also counted among the favorite foods of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is consumed both as a food and as a drink. It is especially common in Asian countries. To enhance its taste, sugar or jaggery is often added. Sattu contains vitamins A and C, calcium, and iron, making it a highly nutritious food. If available, it should certainly be consumed during the summer. The benefits of sattu were also mentioned by Sayyiduna ʿUmar al-Farooq Azamرضی اللہ عنہ. On one occasion, he had sattu brought for a woman who had just given birth and offered it to her to drink. He also said: اشربي هذا فإن هذا يقطع الوجع ويقبض الحشي ويعصم الأمعاء ويدر العروق - وفي لفظ: فإن هذا يشد أحشاءك ويسهل عليك الدم وينزل لك اللبن "Drink this, for it relieves pain, controls the stomach, strengthens the intestines, and improves blood circulation." In another narration, he said: "This will strengthen your abdomen, ease your blood flow, and help the milk to come in." (Kanz al-‘Ummāl, Ḥadīth 35975)

Hospitality Shown with Sattu

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that the Noble Prophet ﷺ held the walima (wedding feast) of Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidatuna Safiyyah رضي الله عنها with sattu and dates. (Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 3220)

The Noble Prophet ﷺ Broke His Fast with Sattu

“We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was fasting. When the sun set, he ﷺ said to one of the people, ‘O so-and-so! Dismount and prepare sattu for us.’ The man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! If only you would wait until evening truly comes.’ He ﷺ again said, ‘Dismount and prepare it for us.’ The man said, ‘But it still seems that some of the day remains.’ The Holy Prophet ﷺ again repeated, ‘Dismount and prepare it for us.’ So he dismounted and prepared the sattu for them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank it. Then the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: ‘When you see the night approaching from this side, then the fasting person should break his fast.’ And he pointed with his hand toward the east.” (Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith reference)

The Holy Prophet ﷺ Ate Sattu

Before this, the Holy Prophet ﷺ drinking sattu was mentioned. It is also established from a narration that the Holy Prophet ﷺ ate sattu. Bashir bin Yasaar, the freed slave of Banu Haritha, reported that Suwayd bin Nu'man رضي الله عنه informed him that he accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the year of Khaybar. When they reached Sahba, which is near Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the Asr prayer and then asked for food to be brought. Nothing was presented except sattu. He ﷺ ordered it to be mixed with water, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ate from it, and we also ate from it.

Health and Scientific Benefits of Sattu

• Sattu relieves pain, regulates the stomach, and strengthens the intestines, as stated by Sayyiduna Umar Farooq Azam • Sattu refreshes the mind and brain. • Sattu is an excellent remedy to counter the effects of heat. • It rapidly helps build muscle and increases physical strength. • Sattu is rich in protein, which plays an important role in controlling body weight. • Drinking sattu on an empty stomach helps relieve various digestive issues. • Sattu is also high in fiber, which helps relieve constipation, making it one of the best natural remedies for it. • Blood pressure control: The potassium in sattu helps regulate blood pressure. • Cooling effect in summer: The fiber content in sattu helps cool the body. It promotes sweating, which lowers body temperature.

The use of vegetables in the diet of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Use of Vegetables

The Noble Prophet ﷺ also consumed vegetables. In fact, there was a particular vegetable—kadu (gourd or pumpkin)—which he especially favored and ate with great fondness. This was a vegetable that the Holy Prophet ﷺ would specifically seek out in a dish and partake of it. In the Seerah of the Noble Prophet ﷺ, we do not find extensive mention of vegetables. However, kadu (gourd) and cucumber are mentioned. Here, we will learn about these two vegetables.

Pumpkin (Bottle Gourd) – The Beloved Food of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

This blessed vegetable has also been mentioned by Allah Almighty in the Holy Qur’an. Allah Almighty states: اَنْۢبَتْنَا عَلَیْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّنْ یَّقْطِیْنٍ “And We grew a tree of gourd (as a miraculous shelter) above him.” (Part 23, Surah As-Saffat, Ayah 146) Under this verse, Tafseer Sirat al-Jinan explains that when Sayyiduna Yunus عَلَیْهِ الصَّلٰوۃُ وَالسَّلَام came out from the belly of the fish, there was no shade at that place. So, Allah Almighty caused a pumpkin plant to grow there to provide shade for him and to protect him from flies. By the command of Allah, a goat would come daily, offering its udder to the blessed mouth of Sayyiduna Yunus عَلَیْهِ الصَّلٰوۃُ وَالسَّلَام and provide him with milk morning and evening. This continued until the blessed skin of his body became firm again, hair grew on his body, and his strength was restored. (Sirat al-Jinan) It should be remembered that pumpkin generally grows as a vine that spreads across the ground. However, this was among the miracles of Sayyiduna Yunus عَلَیْهِ الصَّلٰوۃُ وَالسَّلَام that the pumpkin plant grew like a tree with branches. Its large leaves provided shade under which he عَلَیْهِ الصَّلٰوۃُ وَالسَّلَام would rest.

The Noble Prophet ﷺ Ate Pumpkin (Bottle Gourd)

The Noble Prophet ﷺ loved pumpkin and would carefully pick out the pieces of pumpkin from the curry and eat them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once went to a tailor who had invited him. He presented pumpkin curry, and the Beloved Prophet ﷺ began eating it. Since I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating it, I have loved pumpkin from that day onwards.” (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5433)

Medical and Scientific Benefits of Pumpkin (Bottle Gourd)

Medical experts have mentioned many health benefits of pumpkin. Here are 7 of them: 1. The natural Vitamin C, sodium, potassium, and iron found in bottle gourd not only provide strength but also protect effectively against various stomach disorders if consumed regularly. 2. The components present in bottle gourd have a naturally cooling effect, which helps reduce heat and also lessens the feeling of fatigue. 3. Eating bottle gourd increases appetite and removes weakness. 4. Bottle gourd is very beneficial for patients suffering from constipation. 5. Pumpkin helps relieve liver pain. 6. Use of fruits in the diet of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

The Noble Messenger ﷺ included various fruits in his diet. The fruits that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ honored by making them part of his meals are mentioned here, so that when we eat these fruits, we do so with the remembrance of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ. In doing so, not only will the sweetness and flavor of the fruit feel enhanced, but eating them with the intention of following the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet ﷺ will also become a source of reward for us.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate is among the fruits that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ consumed. Allah Almighty has also mentioned it in the Holy Qur’an. It is one of the fruits that will be granted to the people of Paradise as well—though, of course, the taste of the fruits of Paradise will be far superior to those of this world. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an: فِیْهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّ نَخْلٌ وَّ رُمَّان “In them are (all kinds of) fruits, and dates and pomegranate.” (Surah Ar-Rahman, Ayah 68, Part 27) It is also reported that within the pomegranates of this world is a seed from the pomegranates of Paradise. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: ما من رمانة من رمانكم إلا وهو يلقح بحبة من رمان الجنة “There is no pomegranate among your pomegranates except that it contains a seed from the pomegranates of Paradise.” (Kanz al-‘Ummal, Hadith 35324)

The Benefits of Pomegranate

1. Sayyiduna Ali al-Murtaza رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, the fourth Caliph of the Muslims, said: “Eat pomegranate seeds along with their inner membrane (the thin white layer surrounding the seeds), as it cleanses the stomach.” 2. Pomegranate helps control blood pressure. 3. It improves memory, strengthens bones, and prevents dehydration. 4. It enhances the digestive system and boosts immunity. 5. Watermelon

Watermelon is an extremely beneficial fruit for the summer season. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ used to eat watermelon together with dates. It is mentioned in the Hadith: عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: " يَأْكُلُ الْبِطِّيخَ بِالرُّطَبِ فَيَقُولُ: نَكْسِرُ حَرَّ هَذَا بِبَرْدِ هَذَا، وَبَرْدَ هَذَا بِحَرِّ هَذَا Narrated by Sayyidatuna Aisha رضی اللہ عنہا: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to eat watermelon with fresh dates and would say: “We balance the heat of this (date) with the coolness of this (watermelon), and the coolness of (watermelon) with the heat of that (date).” (Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3836)

The Scientific and Medicinal Benefits of Watermelon

Multiple studies have found that watermelon contains a compound called “lycopene,” which helps prevent the development of certain types of cancer in humans. 3. This fruit also acts as an antioxidant, boosts immunity, and helps protect the skin from damage caused by the sun’s rays. 4. It helps prevent dehydration. 5. Its unique components also help reduce acidity and stress. 6. Watermelon supports skin hydration and helps maintain its freshness. 7. It contains 92% water, which helps the body stay well-hydrated and prevents water deficiency.

Dates

Dates are nutritious and delicious fruits consumed all over the world — especially during the blessed month of Ramadan, when their use becomes particularly prominent in Muslim countries. At iftar (breaking the fast), it is rare to find a table without dates. Dates were also highly beloved and favored by our Noble Prophet ﷺ. According to Tafsir Ruh al-Bayan (Vol. 7, p. 393), the first date palm tree on earth was created from the leftover clay of Sayyiduna Ādam عليه السلام. Despite being a small fruit in size, dates have over 4,000 known varieties. When Muslims travel for Umrah, they often buy dates as a special gift from Madīnah Munawwarah — and in particular, the Ajwah date, which holds a special virtue due to the merits mentioned by the Holy Prophet ﷺ, is especially sought after. Dates – A Fruit Eaten by the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

The Noble Prophet ﷺ ate date halwa (a sweet dish): عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ قَالَ: نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ ﷺ عَلٰى أَبِي فَقَرَّبْنَا إِلَيْهِ طَعَامًا وَوَطْبَةً فَأَكَلَ مِنْهَا ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِتَمْرٍ فَكَانَ يَأْكُلُهٗ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Busr رضی اللہ عنہ: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit our father. We presented food and a date halwa to him, and he ate some of it. Then some dried dates were brought to him, and he began to eat them.” (Mir’āt al-Manajiḥ, Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 2427) The Beloved Prophet ﷺ also ate tharid made with dates and butter: عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ أَحَبَّ الطَّعَامَ إِلٰى رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ ﷺ الثَّرِيْدُ مِنَ الْخُبْزِ و الثَّرِيْدُ مِنَ الحَيْسِ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas: “The most beloved food to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was tharid made with bread and tharid made with dates and butter.” (Mir’at al-Manajih, Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 4220) The Noble Prophet ﷺ also ate dates along with cucumber: عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللّٰهِ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ الرُّطَبَ بِالْقِثَّاءِ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Ja‘far: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating fresh dates with cucumber.” (Mir’at al-Manajih, Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 4815)

The Medicinal and Scientific Benefits of Dates

The health benefits mentioned in narrations and by medical experts are presented here. • Eating dates on an empty stomach in the morning is beneficial for protection against magic and poison. A narration from Jami‘ al-Saghir states: في عجوة العالية أول البكرة على ريق النفس شفاء من كل سحر أو سم “In the ‘Ajwah dates of ‘Āliyah, taken early in the morning on an empty stomach, is a cure for every kind of magic or poison.” (Jāmi‘ al-Saghir, Hadith 4262) • ‘Ajwah dates contain healing against poison. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «العَجْوَةُ مِنَ الجَنَّةِ وَفِيهَا شِفَاءٌ مِنَ السُّمِّ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "‘Ajwah dates are from Paradise, and they contain a cure for poison." • Imam Dhahabi رحمۃ اللہ said: Feeding dates to a pregnant woman, inshā’Allah, results in the birth of a boy who is beautiful, patient, and soft-natured. (Madani Panj Surah, p. 356) • Eating dates along with cucumber helps eliminate weakness and thinness of the body. • Boiling dates in milk and consuming them makes for an excellent energizing food. • Dates serve as an effective remedy for jaundice. • Soaking dates overnight and drinking their water in the morning is a simple and effective treatment for heart attacks and other heart conditions. • When eating old dates, always open and check them inside first, as they may sometimes contain small red insects (worms).

Grapes

It is authentically reported that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ ate grapes. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said: “I went to visit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw that he was eating grapes.” (Al-Muʿjam al-Kabir, Vol. 12, p. 115, Hadith 12727) In the part where the Beloved Prophet’s ﷺ eating of pomegranate was mentioned earlier, the same narration reported by Imam Zurqani also states that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ ate grapes. It is noted that during an illness, Sayyiduna Jibraeel عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ came to the Beloved Prophet ﷺ with a plate containing grapes and pomegranate, from which the Beloved Prophet ﷺ partook. (Sharh az-Zurqani, Vol. 6, p. 500)

The Medicinal Benefits of Grapes

1. Digestive Health: Grapes contain fiber, which aids in digestion. The fiber found in grapes is mostly insoluble, meaning it passes through your intestines and helps keep the digestive system healthy. Grape juice is also a valuable component that supports proper digestion. 2. Muscle Strength: Grapes may help improve muscle strength and performance. A study conducted on mice at the University of Georgia found that compounds present in grape skin — such as catechins, quercetin, and resveratrol — helped reduce fatigue and improve fitness and muscle function. Although such research has not been conducted on humans, the energy derived from grapes can help you feel better. 3. Easier Breathing: Studies show that a lower intake of fruits and vegetables may increase the risk of asthma and respiratory problems. Eating grapes can help reduce the symptoms of asthma. According to findings published in the journal Nutrients, fruits and vegetables play a significant role in both the prevention and management of asthma.

Melon – A Fruit Eaten by the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Melon is a delicious and beneficial summer fruit. Like bottle gourd, it also grows as a vine on the ground. Among fresh fruits, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ particularly liked melon and grapes. He ﷺ would eat melon with bread, sugar, and at times even with dates. (Faizan-e-Sunnat, p. 305, summarized)

The Medicinal Benefits of Melon

• Melon reduces intense thirst. • It helps relieve constipation and dryness of the stomach. • It strengthens the heart and mind. • Melon also helps eliminate dandruff and itching of the scalp. • It assists in getting rid of bladder stones. (Ghareloo Ilaj, p. 96) • If a pregnant woman eats melon in abundance, it is said that the child will be beautiful and healthy.

Conclusion and Supplication
