شمائل ترمذی (حدیث 276)Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Saad رضي الله عنه said: I asked the Noble Prophet ﷺ about praying at home or in the mosque (that is, which is better for me). He ﷺ said: “You see how close my house is to the mosque, yet I prefer to pray at home rather than in the mosque, except for the Fard prayers.”
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit رضي الله عنه narrated that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: 'O people! Offer your Nafil Salah in your homes, for it is better for a man to pray Nafil Salah in his home, except for the Fard Salah.' Allama Ghulam Rasul Razvi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ states: 'We got to know that Nafil prayers in the house are better than in the mosque, even in the three sacred mosques (Masjid al Haraam, Masjid an Nabawi, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque).' Abu Dawud, with a sound chain of narration, narrated from Zaid bin Thabit that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ said, 'Except for the Fard Salah, a person's prayer is greater than praying in my mosque. Therefore, if one prays a Nafli Salah in Masjid an Nabawi, it is rewarded as a thousand prayers, so according to the generality of the hadith, if he prays it at home, it will be better than a thousand prayers.' The great jurist, Allama Mufti Sharif al-Haq Amjadi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ says: 'It is better to pray Nafli prayers at home rather than in the mosque, because secrecy and modesty are better in Nafli prayers so that hypocrisy and showing off do not enter.' Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan رحمۃ اللہ علیہ says: 'Here, general Nafli prayers are mentioned, not specific prayers like Ishraq, travel, eclipse, or Istisqa prayers, which are better in the mosque.' Allama Badruddin Aini رحمۃ اللہ علیہ states the wisdom of praying at home: 'Praying at home prevents hypocrisy, brings blessings to the home, brings down Allah's mercy, and keeps away the Devil/Satan.'
