Hadith

Translation

Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah رضي الله عنه said: The Noble Prophet ﷺ continued to pray (tahajjud) until his blessed feet became swollen. It was asked: “Why do you endure so much hardship while Allah has forgiven the past and future sins because of you?” He ﷺ replied: “Should I not then be grateful to Allah?”

Narration

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid رضي الله عنه said, "I once decided to carefully observe the prayer of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. I lay down at the threshold of the Final Prophet's ﷺ house or tent (to observe closely). The Final Prophet ﷺ first offered two short rakats. Then he ﷺ offered two two long rakats (technically 4 rakats but in two sets of two rakats in each set), followed by two shorter rakats and then two even shorter rakats. Then he ﷺ offered the Witr prayer. In total, it was thirteen rakats." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shaqeeq رضي الله عنه said, "I asked Sayyidatuna Aisha رضي الله عنها about the Nawafil (voluntary prayers) of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. She said, 'The Holy Prophet ﷺ used to offer Nawafil standing for a long part of the night and sitting for a long part of the night. It was the habit of the Last Prophet ﷺ that when he ﷺ recited the Quran standing, he ﷺ would also perform the ruku and sujood while standing. And when he ﷺ recited the Quran sitting, he ﷺ would also perform the ruku and sujood while sitting.' He further said, 'I asked Sayyidatuna Aisha رضي الله عنها about the additional prayers (except Fard) of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. She mentioned two rakats before Duhr Salah, two after Duhr, two after Maghrib, two after Isha Salah, and two before morning Salah.'
