Any action that is done with the intention of seeking Allah Almighty’s pleasure, and for which having such an intention is also Islamically valid, is an act of worship. In other words, for any action to be considered an act of worship, the following two basic conditions must be fulfilled: 1. The action itself must be Islamically permissible; the Shariah must not have prohibited it. 2. The action must be performed with the intention of seeking Allah Almighty’s pleasure.
In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty states the purpose behind the creation of humans and jinn: وَ مَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَ الْاِنْسَ اِلَّا لِیَعْبُدُوْنِ “And I have created jinn and human beings only for this, that they should worship Me.” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:56, Part 27) The entire outward life of our Beloved Prophet ﷺ was spent in the worship of Allah Almighty. The personality and life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ have been presented to us in the Holy Quran as a role model. Let us, therefore, understand the manner in which the Beloved Prophet ﷺ worshipped, in the light of the Holy Quran.
The Beloved Prophet ﷺ had immense love for prayer (Salah). He described prayer as the coolness of his eyes, his source of comfort, and the key to Paradise. He also spoke of prayer as a light (nur). Likewise, even while traveling, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ took great care to perform his prayers. Wherever he happened to be, as soon as the time for prayer arrived, he would leave all other matters and stand to pray. At times, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ would spend the entire night in the worship of Allah. Because of his prolonged standing in prayer, his blessed feet would become swollen, yet he would continue devoting himself to the worship of Allah.
Sayyidatuna A'ishah Siddiqah رضي الله عنها narrated: The Beloved Messenger ﷺ would stand in prayer for such a long time that his blessed feet would become swollen. One day, Sayyidatuna A'ishah Siddiqah رضي الله عنها said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why do you exert yourself in this way when Allah, through His grace, has forgiven your past and future shortcomings?" The Beloved Prophet ﷺ replied: اَفَلَا اَکُوْنُ عَبْدًا شَکُوْرًا "Should I not then be a grateful servant of Allah?"
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Shikhkhir رضي الله عنه narrates the state of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ during prayer: "Once, I came into the presence of the Noble Prophet ﷺ while he was praying. Because of his weeping, a sound was coming from his blessed chest like the sound of a boiling pot." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 904)
مِنَ الَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ ۖ “And offer Tahajjud in some part of the night; this is a special addition for you (O Beloved).” (Qur'an 17:79, Surah Al-Isra, Ayah 79) When a Muslim sleeps for a while after offering the obligatory Isha prayer and then wakes up during the night, the time for Tahajjud begins. This time remains until the beginning of Fajr. Tahajjud prayer was obligatory upon the Beloved Prophet ﷺ.
While describing the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ manner of performing Tahajjud prayer, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah ibn Yaman رضي الله عنهما narrates: One night, I offered the (Tahajjud) prayer with the Beloved Prophet ﷺ. He began reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. I thought to myself that he would bow after reciting one hundred verses, but he continued reciting. Then I thought that he would complete it in a single rak'ah, yet he continued. I then thought that he would bow after finishing it, but instead he began Surah An-Nisa and completed it. Then he began Surah Aal 'Imran and completed it as well. He ﷺ recited slowly and deliberately. Whenever he came across a verse glorifying Allah, he glorified Him. Whenever he came across a verse containing supplication, he made supplication. Whenever he came across a verse seeking Allah's protection, he sought His protection. Then he ﷺ bowed and repeatedly recited, سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي الْعَظِيم "Subhana Rabbiyal 'Azim" (Glory be to my Lord, the Greatest). His bowing was about as long as his standing. Then he said, سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَه رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْد "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah. Rabbana lakal hamd" (Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, all praise belongs to You), and stood for a long time, nearly as long as his bowing. Then he ﷺ prostrated and repeatedly recited, سُبْحٰن رَبِّيَ الْاَعْلٰى "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Highest). His prostration was about as long as his standing. (Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq, Hadith 2845)
While describing the way the Beloved Prophet ﷺ performed the Tahajjud prayer, Sayyidatuna A'ishah رضي الله عنها said: The Beloved Messenger ﷺ would rest during the first part of the night. Then, during the third part of the night, when the rooster crowed, he would rise and perform the Tahajjud prayer. This is the time when Allah's mercy descends, and it is a time of great tranquility, allowing a person to pray peacefully without disturbance. After worshipping his Lord, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ would lie down or sleep during the final sixth part of the night, at the time of suhur, so that he would be refreshed and physically prepared for the Fajr prayer. (Umdat al-Qari)
The Beloved Prophet’s ﷺ prayers were undoubtedly perfect in every way. Even during his voluntary prayers, his eyes would overflow with tears out of awe and reverence for Allah. He would turn to Allah with such deep love, devotion, and sincerity that he became completely detached from every worldly thought and drew exceedingly close to the Court of the Lord of Majesty. No one has ever offered a prayer as perfect and accepted as his, nor will anyone ever be able to do so. May Allah grant us blessings through the perfect prayers of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ.
Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) is also an act of worship, just like prayer and the recitation of the Quran. Therefore, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ would also seek forgiveness frequently, even though the Beloved Prophet ﷺ is infallible and sin never comes near him. Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ himself said: وَاللہِ اِنِّی لَاَسْتَغْفِرُ اللہَ وَاَتُوبُ اِلَیْہِ فِی الْیَوْمِ اَکْثَرَ مِنْ سَبْعِینَ مَرَّۃً “By Allah! I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.” (Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 2323)
In the Holy Quran, Allah, the Lord of Majesty, also commanded the Beloved Prophet ﷺ to seek forgiveness, as mentioned in Surah An-Nasr: فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا “Thus glorify your Lord whilst praising Him, and seek forgiveness from Him; indeed, He is the Greatest Acceptor of repentance.” (Surah An-Nasr, 110:3) The Wisdom Behind the Noble Prophet ﷺ Seeking Forgiveness: Allamah Badr al-Din Ayni رحمه الله said: "The Noble Prophet ﷺ would seek forgiveness as an expression of humility or for the purpose of teaching the Ummah." (Umdat al-Qari, under Hadith: 6307) Allamah Ibn Battal Maliki رحمه الله said: "The Noble Prophets عليهم السلام seek forgiveness, not because of any sin, but because, despite being the most grateful and devoted in worship among people, they are unable to fulfill Allah Almighty's due right as it truly deserves." (Sharh Bukhari by Ibn Battal) Imam Muhammad Ghazali رحمه الله said: "The Noble Prophet ﷺ was always progressing toward higher ranks, and whenever he progressed from one state to another, he would seek forgiveness for his previous state." (Fath al-Bari)
Allah Almighty also commanded the believers to seek forgiveness. All of you turn towards Allah in repentance, in the hope of attaining success.” (Part 18, Surah An-Nur, 24:31) This blessed verse teaches us that Istighfar is an act through which a person can remove the darkness of sins from their heart and attain closeness to Allah Almighty. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, hearts also become rusty just as copper becomes rusty, and seeking forgiveness is its means of purification.” (Majma‘ al-Zawa’id, Hadith 17575) May Allah Almighty include us among those who seek forgiveness abundantly and make it easy for us to adopt this beautiful practice of our Beloved Prophet ﷺ. Ameen.
The Beloved Prophet ﷺ had an unparalleled love for the Quran. Whenever the Noble Prophet ﷺ would recite the Quran, tears would flow from his eyes. He would recite it himself, and he would also listen to the Quran being recited by the Noble Companions رضوان اللہ علیہم اجمعین. Such was his love and appreciation for the Quran that both reciting and listening to it were deeply enjoyable experiences for him. It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud رضي الله عنه said: When Surah Al-Mursalat was revealed, and the Noble Prophet ﷺ was reciting it, his blessed face was wet. In other words, while reciting the Quran, a particular spiritual state would overcome the Beloved Prophet ﷺ. Similarly, whenever the Noble Prophet ﷺ and the Noble Companions رضوان اللہ علیہم اجمعین would meet one another, they would make great effort to listen to the Quran. In other words, when they met, they would say, "Recite some Quran for us." This was their way of meeting one another. It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that once the Noble Prophet ﷺ said to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud رضي الله عنه, "Recite the Quran to me." He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how can I recite the Quran before you? The Quran has been revealed to you." The Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite it. I wish to listen to the Quran from you." He began reciting Surah An-Nisa while keeping his gaze lowered. He said that when I reached this verse: "So, how will it be when We bring a witness from each Ummah (nation), and We shall bring you, O Beloved, as a witness and observer over all of them?" The Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "That is enough! That is enough!" Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud رضي الله عنه says that when I raised my eyes and looked, I saw tears flowing from the eyes of the Noble Prophet ﷺ. Furthermore, the Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "The Quran was revealed with sorrow, so recite it with sorrow." (Majma al-Zawaid, Hadith: 11694)
We should also make it a daily habit to recite some portion of the Quran every day, because reciting the Quran is a sign of love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. As Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud رضي الله عنه said: "Whoever wishes to know whether he loves Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ should look at whether he loves the Quran. If he loves the Quran, meaning that he recites it and acts upon it, then he also loves Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ." (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir lil-Tabarani, Hadith: 8657)
Reciting the Holy Quran also provides relief from spiritual and inner ailments. A person complained to the Noble Prophet ﷺ of pain in his throat, so he said, "Make recitation of the Quran a practice." (Shu'ab al-Iman, Hadith: 2580) Another person came to him and said, "I am experiencing pain in my chest." He said, "Recite the Quran." Allah says: وَ شِفَآءٌ لِّمَا فِی الصُّدُوْرِ The Quran is a healing for the hearts. (Al-Durr al-Manthur, 4/366) Indeed, the Holy Quran is also an excellent remedy for various ailments. As the Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: خَیْرُالدَّوَاءِ اَلْقُرْاٰنُ "The best remedy is the Quran." (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3501) May Allah Almighty, through the blessing and grace of the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ love for the Quran, grant us the ability to regularly recite the Quran, understand it, and live our lives according to it. Ameen.
