When the Quraysh continued to oppress the Muslims and their persecution intensified, Allah's Final Prophet ﷺ, allowed his loyal companions to migrate to Abyssinia.
The King of Abyssinia, Negus , was a Christian and a just and compassionate ruler. Therefore, in the fifth year of prophethood, a group of eleven men and four women left their beloved homeland and migrated to Abyssinia. This is known as the first migration.
A few days later, several more companions migrated to Abyssinia, bringing the total number of migrants to 82. Seeing this, the Quraysh sent a delegation to the King of Abyssinia, urging him to hand over the Muslims to them. However, the efforts of the disbelievers were unsuccessful.
Certain regions of the current African country of Ethiopia were referred to as Abyssinia by the Arabs. This was the kingdom of the Negus of Abyssinia, who later embraced Islam. His tomb is located in Ethiopia.
