سنن الترمزی (حدیث 1968)

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh Khuwaylid bin Amr Khuzai رضي الله عنه narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Day of Resurrection should show humility and consideration for his guest according to the proper guideline. It was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, what is this guideline?” He ﷺ replied: “One day and one night, and hospitality lasts for three days, and after three days, it is charity (sadaqah).” And in the narration of Muslim: It is not permissible for a Muslim to stay with his Muslim brother for so long that he causes him to fall into sin. The Companions رضي الله عنهم asked: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! How would he cause him to fall into sin?” He ﷺ replied: “By staying at his place for such a long time that he has nothing left for hospitality.”

Narration

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I am in great need (due to hunger).' The Noble Prophet ﷺ sent him to his wives رضی اللہ تعالی عنهن (so that they might offer him something to eat), but they did not have anything to offer. The Noble Prophet ﷺ then said: 'Is there anyone who will host this guest tonight? May Allah have mercy on him.' Upon this, an Ansari companion (Abu Talha) stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he is my guest tonight.' Then he took him to his house and said to his wife: 'He is the guest of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, do not withhold anything from him.' His wife said: 'By Allah, I have nothing at the moment except the children's food.' Sayyiduna Abu Talha رضي الله عنه said: 'If the children ask for food, put them to sleep, and put out the lamp. We will remain hungry tonight.' His wife did as he said. Then, in the morning, Sayyiduna Abu Talha رضي الله عنه came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah Almighty has approved of your and your wife's action.'

Key Points

  • Honoring guests and showing hospitality to them is the Sunnah of the Prophets عَلَیْہِمُ السَّلَام .
  • In Islam, hospitality towards guests has been commanded. When a guest arrives, he brings his own sustenance with him.
