Hadith

Translation

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه that he said: I heard the Noble Prophet ﷺ say, “If you place your trust in Allah as He truly deserves to be trusted, He will surely provide for you as He provides for the birds—they leave in the morning with empty stomachs and return in the evening full.”

Narration

Allama Mulla Ali Qari رحمۃ اللہ علیہ says: 'When a crow's chick hatches from the egg, it is white. Its parents dislike it and leave it. Thus, the chick remains hungry. But Allah Almighty sends flies and ants towards it, which it eats and grows a little and also becomes black. Its parents return to it and, seeing its black color, start taking care of it. In this way, it continues to receive sustenance without any effort.' Sayyiduna Hatim Asamm رحمۃ اللہ علیہ said: 'Trust (Tawakkul) is of four types: (1) Trust in creation, (2) Trust in wealth, (3) Trust in oneself, (4) Trust in one's Lord. One who trusts in creation says: 'While so-and-so is present, no sorrow can reach me.' And one who trusts in wealth says: 'As long as I have abundant wealth, nothing can harm me.' And one who trusts in himself says: 'As long as my body is healthy, I will not lack anything.' These three types are the trust of the ignorant. And one who trusts in Allah Almighty says: 'Whether I am rich or poor, I do not care because my Lord is with me; He will take care of me as He wills.' This is true trust.' The renowned commentator, great scholar of Hadith, sage of the Ummah, Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan رحمۃ اللہ علیہ says: 'True trust is to recognize Allah Almighty as the true doer. Some have said that striving and leaving the result to Allah Almighty is true trust. Engage the body in work, and keep the heart attached to Allah Almighty. It is also an experience that those who trust in Allah Almighty do not die of hunger.'

Key Points

  • Sustenance (Rizq) is pre-ordained; it will surely reach (a person). Allah Almighty provides sustenance to His creation in whatever way He wills.
  • One should definitely strive for sustenance (Rizq); striving for sustenance is by no means contrary to reliance (Tawakkul) on Allah.
