Translation

Sayyiduna Wathilah bin Asqa رضي الله عنه said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Allah selected Kinanah from among the descendants of Sayyiduna Ismail عليه السلام, and from Kinanah He chose Quraysh, and from Quraysh He chose Banu Hashim, and from Banu Hashim He chose me.”

Narration

The Beloved Prophet ﷺ belonged to the lineage of Prophet Ismail, who are commonly known as the Banu Ismail (the children of Ismail). One of the sons of Prophet Ismail was Qadeer, and Prophet Adnan, the ancestor of all the Adnani Arab tribes, descended from him. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ also belonged to a branch of the Adnani tribes, and the Beloved Prophet ﷺ also belonged to one of the branches of Adnani tribes, that branch was known as the Quraysh. This branch descended from Fihr bin Malik. Historians and genealogists confirm that the Beloved Prophet’s ﷺ lineage can be traced back to his ancestor Prophet Adnan with utmost accuracy and truthfulness. The Beloved Prophet's lineage up to Prophet Adnan is undeniably clear, spanning twenty (20) generations. In this regard, Ibn Hisham states: "Muhammad, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib (Shaiba), son of Hashim (Umru), son of Abdul Munaf (al-Mughira), son of Qusi (Zayd), son of Kilab, son of Murrah, son of Ka'b, son of Luai, son of Ghalib, son of Fihr (Quraysh), son of Malik, son of al-Nadr (Qais), son of Kinanah, son of Khuzaimah, son of Mudrikah (Aamir), son of Ilyas, son of Mudar, son of Nizar, son of Ma'ad, son of Adnan, son of Ad." Thus, an estimated 25 centuries separate Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Prophet Ibrahim, while approximately 18 centuries separate Prophet Adnan from Prophet Ibrahim. There were approximately 40 intermediaries between Ibrahim and Adnan. A gap of approximately 1800 years between Ibrahim and Adnan, and it is impossible to have only 10, 15, or 20 ancestors between them. The complete lineage from Prophet Adnan to Adam, as mentioned by Tabari, is as follows: Adnan, son of Addad, son of Hamis'a, and Hamis'a is Salman, and he is Amin, son of Hamita'a, and he is Hamida'a, and he is al-Shajib, son of Salaman, and he is Manjar, and he is Nabit, son of 'Uws, and he is Tha'laba, son of Bura, and he is Buz, son of Shawha, and he is Saad Rajab, son of Y'amana, and he is Qamwal, son of Ksudana, and he is Muhlim Dhu al-'Ayn, son of Harana, and he is al-'Awam, son of Baldasa, and he is al-Muhtamil, son of Badlana, and he is Yidlaf, and he is Ra'imah, son of Tahba, and he is Talib, and he is al-'Ayiqan, son of Jahmi, and he is Jahm, and he is 'Ala, son of Mahshi, and he is Tahish, and he is al-Shahdoud, son of Ma'jali, and he is Makhi, and he is al-Zarib Khatm al-Nar, son of 'Aqara, and he is 'Afi, and he is 'Uqbar Abu al-Jin, son of 'Aaqari, and he is 'Aqar, and he is Ibrahim Jame'a, son of Bid'a'i, and he is Ismail Dhu al-Matabikh, son of Abda'i, and he is 'Ubaid, and he is Yizan al-Ta'an, son of Hamadi, and he is Hamdan, and he is Ismail Dhu al-'Awj, son of Bishmani, and he is Bishin, and he is al-Muta'im fi al-Mahal, son of Bathrani, and he is Bathram, and he is al-Tamh, son of Bahrani, and he is Yahzan, and he is al-Qusur, son of Nilhani, and he is Yilhan, and he is al-'Anud, son of Ra'wani, and he is Ra'wi, and he is al-Da'da', son of 'Aqari, and he is 'Aqar, son of Dasan, and he is al-Zaid, son of 'Aasaar, and he is 'Aasar, and he is al-Nidwan Dhu al-Andiyah, son of al-Qadur, to whom the rule went, and he is Bani Javan, son of al-Qad, and then the rule returned to them, then Ibn Qanad, and he is Qanar, and he is Iyyama, son of Thamar, and he is Bahami, and he is Dhu al-'Atiq, and he is Dhus (the most beautiful), then Ibn Falaj and Qutora, then Ibn Maqsar, and he is Maqasri, and he is Hisn, son of Sami, and he is Sama, and he is al-Majshar, son of Mazra, who is also called Murrah, son of Sanfa, and he is al-Samr, and he is al-Safi, son of Ja'tham, and he is 'Uram, and he is al-Nabit, and he is Qaidar, son of Ismail, the truthful in promise, son of Ibrahim Khalil al-Rahman, son of Tarukh, son of Nahor, son of Saru’, son of Arghu, son of Baligh, and he is Faalaj, son of 'Abir, son of Shaalih, son of Arfakhshad, son of Saam, son of Nuh, son of Lamek, son of Methushelkh, son of Ekhnokh, and he is Idris, son of Yird, son of Mahlaeel, son of Keenan, son of Enosh, son of Sesh, and he is Habitu'llah, son of Adam. The greatness and nobility of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ lineage were so well-known and renowned in Arabia that even his opponents acknowledged its greatness. Before accepting Islam, Hazrat Abu Sufyan bin Harb acknowledged in the court of the Roman Emperor Heraclius that Muhammad ﷺ was the most honorable among them. When Heraclius asked Hazrat Abu Sufyan about the lineage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he replied that Muhammad ﷺ is of pure and noble descent.
