ریاض الصالحین (حدیث 289)It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Holy Prophet ﷺ, said: “There is a dinar which you spend in the way of Allah, and there is one through which you free a slave; there is one which you give as charity to a poor person, and one which you spend on your family. Among all of these, the most virtuous is the one you spend on your family.”
In the aforementioned Hadith, the virtue of spending in four ways is mentioned: (1) Spending in the path of Allah, (2) Spending to free a slave, (3) Spending on the poor, and (4) Spending on one's family. Certainly, all these matters are virtuous. Rasoolullah ﷺ said: 'The first thing that will be weighed in a person's scale on the Day of Judgment is what he spent on his family.' A person passed by the Leader of the Worlds ﷺ, and the Companions عَلَیْہِمُ الرِّضْوَان, upon seeing his strong and agile body, said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we wish he would spend his strength in the way of Allah.' The Rasoolullah ﷺ replied, 'If he has gone out to seek sustenance for his young children, then he is in the way of Allah. And if he has gone out to seek sustenance for his elderly parents, then he is also in the way of Allah. If he has gone out to seek sustenance for his chastity, then he is also in the way of Allah. But if he has gone out for show and boasting, then he is in the way of Satan.
