Hadith

Translation

Sayyidatuna Aisha Siddiqa Tayyibah Tahirah رضي الله عنها said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in this very house of mine, “O Allah, whoever takes charge of any matter concerning my Ummah and then deals with them harshly, then burden him with hardship. And whoever takes charge of any matter concerning my Ummah and treats them with gentleness, then treat him with gentleness.”

Narration

The Noble Messenger, the Crown of Madinah ﷺ has stated in his exalted words: "Allah the Almighty dislikes four types of people: One who sells goods on oath, an arrogant poor person, an old adulterer, and a tyrannical ruler. When the King of the Universe ﷺ appointed any of his companions as a governor or administrator, he would say to him: 'Give good tidings, do not repel, make things easy, and do not make them difficult.' The Beloved Prophet ﷺ has said: 'Whoever becomes a judge over the Muslims seeking his own desire, if his justice prevails over his tyranny, then Paradise is for him; and whoever's tyranny prevails over his justice, then Hellfire is for him.' The Beloved Prophet ﷺ prayed: 'May Allah the Almighty be harsh to any ruler or governor who is harsh to my Ummah, meaning who imposes unnecessary difficulties on them or treats them harshly. And may Allah the Almighty be gentle with any ruler or governor who is gentle and compassionate towards my Ummah.' Undoubtedly, this supplication of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ is accepted in the Divine Court, and no wise person can deny it.

Key Points

  • If a Muslim ruler oppresses his people without a valid reason, then Allah Almighty will afflict him with hardship.
  • Remember, whoever oppressed Allah's creation and acted unjustly faced a terrible end and got destroyed.
  • For the judge whose justice prevails over his tyranny, there is the good news of Paradise.
