ریاض الصالحین، (حدیث 862)It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that he once passed by some children and greeted them with salam. He then said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do the same.
Sayyiduna Sayyar رضي الله عنه says: I was walking with Sayyiduna Thabit Bunani رضي الله عنه, we passed by some children and he greeted them. Sayyiduna Thabit رضي الله عنه (while narrating his own experience) said: I was with Anas رضي الله عنه, we passed by some children and he greeted them. Then Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه (while narrating his own experience) said: I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he passed by some children and greeted them. The Holy Prophet ﷺ used to greet children with Salam in order to teach them the etiquette of Sharia. In greeting children, the aspects of humility, modesty, and gentleness are very prominent. The Holy Prophet's ﷺ greeting children with Salam is from his good character, and in it is also intended the practice of teaching children the Sunnah and training them in the etiquette of Sharia.
