The Noble Prophet's ﷺ good treatment of neighbors

Moral Qualities of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyidatuna Aisha Siddiqa رضي الله عنهما that the Noble Prophet ﷺ said: Sayyiduna Jibraeel عليه السلام continued to advise me regarding the rights of the neighbor so persistently that I thought he would soon declare the neighbor to be an heir.

Narration

Narrated by Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There are three types of neighbors: (1) The neighbor who has one right, and he is the least in terms of the right of neighborhood. (2) The neighbor who has two rights. (3) The neighbor who has three rights, and he is the most superior in terms of the right of neighborhood. In any case, the neighbor who has one right is the non-Muslim neighbor with whom there is no kinship, but only the right of neighborhood. The one who has two rights is the Muslim neighbor who is not a relative; for him, there is the right of Islam and the right of neighborhood. The neighbor who has three rights is the Muslim neighbor who is also a relative; for him, there is the right of Islam, the right of neighborhood, and the right of kinship.' Hazrat Bayazid Bastami رحمۃ اللہ علیہ had a Jewish neighbor. The neighbor went on a journey, leaving his children and wife at home. One night, the Jewish child was crying. Hazrat Bayazid رحمۃ اللہ علیہ asked the mother why the child was crying. The Jewish woman replied, 'There is no lamp in the house, and the child is afraid of the darkness.' From that day on, Hazrat Bayazid رحمۃ اللہ علیہ filled the lamp with oil every day and sent it lit to the Jewish neighbor's house. When the Jew returned from his journey and his wife told him this story, the Jew said, 'In a house where the lamp of Hazrat Bayazid رحمۃ اللہ علیہ has come, how can there be darkness of disbelief?' Saying this, he and all his family members became Muslims.

Key Points

  • Always treat your neighbor with kindness, for those who do not harm their neighbors are considered among the people of complete faith.
  • The pious people used to like for their neighbors what they liked for themselves. The hadiths encourage sending food and drink to neighbors.
  • Enduring the inconvenience caused by a neighbor is not only the right of the neighbor, but it also includes treating them well despite the inconvenience.
