Before the Hijrah, the disbelievers of Makkah inflicted such severe suffering upon the Muslims that their patience reached its limits. Thus, Sayyiduna Khabbab ibn al-Aratt narrates: 'We faced intense hardship and cruelty from the polytheists. I went to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم. He was resting in the shade of the Ka’bah, using his cloak as a pillow under his blessed head. I said: 'Why do you not supplicate against the polytheists?' Upon hearing this, he صلى الله عليه وسلم sat up straight, his blessed face reddened. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: 'Among those who came before you, iron combs were run through them, separating their flesh from their bones, and saws were placed on their heads, splitting them into two. Yet, these tortures could not turn them away from their religion. Allah will bring this religion to its completion, to the extent that a rider will travel from Sana'a to Hadhramaut, fearing no one but Allah.'
