Hadith

Translation

It is narrated from Sayyidatuna Aisha رضي الله عنها that she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “O Aisha, if I wished, mountains of gold would walk with me. An angel came to me whose back reached the level of the Ka’bah. He said, ‘Your Lord sends you His salam and says: If you wish, you may be a kingly prophet, and if you wish, a servant prophet.’ I looked toward Jibraeel عليه السلام, and he advised me to choose humility for myself.”

Narration

Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه narrates that a person came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, يَا خَيْرَ الْبَرِيَّةِ (O best of creation!) The Beloved Prophet ﷺ replied, 'The best of creation is Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ.' Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Al-Shikhir narrates: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a delegation from Banu Amir. We said, 'You are our master.' The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said, 'The Master is God.' Then we said that you are the most excellent and greatest of us in grace and generosity. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said, 'Say this or even less than this; beware lest Satan make you his advocate.' Meaning, since the Beloved Prophet ﷺ is the leader of all prophets, every attribute and every action of his should be the best and highest. The highest form of humility is that despite being the master of everything, he showed humility. Therefore, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ often sat on his knees (two knees) and ate sitting on his haunches, like a devoted servant waiting for his master's call. Mirqat states that sitting on one's knees outside of prayer is also preferable, and the Beloved Prophet ﷺ often sat on his haunches. (Mirqat) The Beloved Prophet ﷺ ate with three fingers and would lick his fingers after eating, then wash his blessed hands. He drank water in three sips.
