The Compassion of Khatam al-Anbiya ﷺ Towards Animals

Personal Traits of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not make the backs of your animals as a pulpit (minbar), for Allah Almighty has made them subservient to you so that they may convey you to cities where you could not reach without great hardship. And Allah has created the earth for you, so fulfill your needs upon it."

Narration

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A man was walking on a path when he became extremely thirsty. He found a well, descended into it, drank water, and then came out. He saw a dog panting with thirst and eating mud. The man thought, 'This dog is suffering from thirst just as I was.' So, he went down into the well again, filled his leather sock with water, held it in his mouth until he climbed back up, and gave the dog water to drink. Allah appreciated his deed and forgave him.' The Companions رضي الله عنهم asked: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is there a reward for us in (being kind to) animals?' He ﷺ said: 'There is a reward for (kindness shown to) every living being.' It was a requirement of the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ general compassion that he forbade setting animals against each other (animal fighting), using any animal as a target, and keeping any animal captive for the purpose of killing it.

Key Points

  • Animals are also creatures created by Allah, the Pure. Showing mercy to them is a rewarding deed. Unnecessarily bothering or hitting them is a sin.
