Hadith

Narration

Once, the Companions رضي الله عنهم requested: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, invoke a curse upon the polytheists.' He ﷺ replied: 'I have not been sent as one who curses, but I have only been sent as a mercy.' "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Sayyiduna Tufail bin Amr Dosi to the tribe of Daws to invite them to Islam. Upon returning, he presented himself before the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'The tribe of Daws is ruined because they have disobeyed and refused to submit. Invoke a curse upon them.' People thought that he ﷺ would invoke a curse, but instead, he ﷺ prayed: اللَّهُمَّ اه٘دِ دَوسًا وَ اَنتِ بِهِم (O Allah, guide Daws and bring them as Muslims). "When the siege of Ta'if was lifted, the Companions requested: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the arrows of the tribe of Thaqif have burnt us. Invoke a curse upon them.' But he ﷺ prayed: اللَّهُمَّ اه٘دِ ثَقِیفًا (O Allah, guide Thaqif)." "During the Battle of Uhud, his ﷺ blessed tooth was martyred (broken), and his ﷺ blessed face was covered in blood, yet these were the words on his ﷺ blessed tongue: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرُ لِقَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لا يَعْلَمُونَ (O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know)."

Key Points

  • From this, we learn that no matter how much someone hurts us, we should forgive them for the sake of God. We should not invoke a curse upon them and should exercise patience.
