The truthfulness of the Noble Prophet ﷺ

Personal Traits of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Salam رضي الله عنه that he said: When the Noble Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, I came to see him. When I looked closely at his radiant face, I recognized that it was not the face of a liar.

Narration

Even strangers, let alone his own people, testified to the truthfulness of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam, before embracing Islam, upon seeing the Beloved Prophet ﷺ, exclaimed: 'وَجهَا لَيْسَ بِوَجْهِ كَذَّابِ' (His face is not the face of a liar). During the period of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, Heraclius, the Roman Emperor, asked Abu Sufyan (who had not yet embraced Islam) about the Beloved Prophet ﷺ: 'Before his claim to prophethood, did you ever suspect him of telling lies?' Abu Sufyan replied, 'No.' Sayyiduna Ali Murtaza رضي الله عنه narrates that once Abu Jahl said to the Beloved Prophet ﷺ: 'We (the Quraysh) do not call you a liar. However, we reject what you have brought (the Book and the Sharia).' Upon this, Allah revealed the following verse regarding Abu Jahl and his like: 'فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يُكَذِّبُوْنَكَ ولَكِنَّ الظَّلِمِينَ بِايَتِ اللهِ يَجْحَدُونَ' (So, they do not belie you; rather, the unjust deny the verses of Allah). Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, the father of Hind (the mother of Sayyiduna Muawiya), who died in a state of disbelief at the Battle of Badr, was once sent by the Quraysh to negotiate with the Noble Prophet ﷺ. He presented several options to the Beloved Prophet ﷺ, suggesting he could choose any of them and abandon his new religion. In response, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ began reciting Surah Fussilat (Ha-Mim Sajdah). When he reached the verse: 'فَإِنْ أَعْرَضُوا' (Then if they turn away their faces), Utbah placed his hand on the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ blessed mouth and, invoking kinship ties, pleaded with him to stop reciting. Afterward, Utbah returned to the Quraysh and narrated what had happened, saying that he had heard the Quran from him. When the Beloved Prophet ﷺ reached the verse: 'إِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَقُلْ أَنْذَرْتُكُمْ صَعِقَةٌ مِثْلَ صَعِقَةِ عَادٍ وَ ثَمُودَ' (Then if they turn away their faces, so say you (O Beloved), "I warn you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt which came upon (the tribes of) 'Aad and Thamood"), I placed my hand on his mouth and, invoking close kinship ties, asked him to stop reciting. You know that Muhammad ﷺ, when he says something, does not lie. Therefore, I feared that the punishment he warned of would befall you.

Key Points

  • A truthful person is never disgraced, and speaking the truth saves one from many further sins.
  • In contrast, a liar tells many more lies to cover up one lie, and their lie is caught sooner or later.
