Blessed bed of the Dear Prophet ﷺ

Blessed bed of the Dear Prophet ﷺ

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

Sayyidatuna Aisha رضي الله عنها said: The bedding of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, which he used for sleeping and resting, was made of leather and filled with the bark of a date-palm tree.

Narration

When Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa رضي الله عنها was asked about the bed of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in her house, she said: 'It was made of leather stuffed with date palm fiber.' Similarly, when Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyidah Hafsa رضي الله عنها was asked about the bed of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in her house, she said: 'It was a coarse cloth which we would fold in two and spread beneath the Holy Prophet ﷺ.' She says: 'One day I thought that if we folded this cloth into four layers instead of two, it would be more comfortable. So we folded it into four layers. When morning came, the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: "What kind of bed did you prepare for me last night?" We said: "It was the same bed that you have, but we folded it into four layers and thought that it would be more comfortable for you." The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: "Return it to its original state. This bedding prevented me from my night prayer."' Sayyidatuna Aisha رضي الله عنها says: 'A woman from the Ansar came to me. She saw the Prophet's bed, which was in the form of a folded leather sheet. The woman went and sent me a quilt filled with wool. When the Beloved Prophet ﷺ came and saw it, he ﷺ said: "Aisha, return it." By Allah! If I wished, Allah Almighty would have moved mountains of gold and silver with me.' It is narrated from some members of Umm Salama's household that the bed of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was similar to what is placed in a grave, and the mosque was near his head, meaning the direction of his bed was the same as the direction of his blessed grave now, with his head towards the right of the Qibla and his feet towards the left. Rather, the place of this bed is the blessed grave, and the blessed blanket on which he used to sleep was spread in the blessed grave. Because the Beloved Prophet ﷺ always had the blessings of the Hereafter in mind, he did not give much importance to worldly comforts. Observing this ascetic and content life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he was offered high-quality mattresses and beds many times, but he did not like to use them.
