The blessed tongue of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The blessed tongue of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Narration

In this blessed verse, Allah Almighty has explained the haste in such a way that during divine revelation, you should not move your purest tongue too quickly. In its interpretation, Imam Razi states: The Beloved Prophet ﷺ used to recite quickly with Sayyiduna Jibril عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, and the reason for his haste was the fear of forgetting. So he was commanded, ‘Even though you recite quickly due to this fear, know that memorization is only possible with Allah's grace and help. Therefore, you should abandon this haste and rely on Allah Almighty's guidance (for memorization).’ This is the meaning of Allah Almighty’s blessed command. The blessed tongue of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was as pure as his pure body. Due to the purity of his blessed mouth, the purity of his blessed tongue was also of the highest degree. This is why the color of the pure tongue was reddish. As mentioned in several narrations, the Beloved Prophet ﷺ used to let his blessed tongue be sucked by his household (Ahl al Bayt), and on one occasion, he let Sayyiduna Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba رضي الله عنه suck his blessed tongue. As narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, كان رسول اللّه صلى اللّٰه علیه وسلم لیدلع لسانه للحسن بن على فیرى الصبى حمرة لسانه فیبھش الیه "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to put out his blessed tongue for Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali رضي الله عنه, and the child would see the redness of his tongue and would pounce on it." When the Beloved Prophet ﷺ spoke with the tongue of prophethood, it felt as if a ray of light had emerged from his blessed mouth. He spoke according to the occasion of the gathering, neither too concise nor too lengthy. Great orators were amazed upon hearing his speech and exclaimed that indeed, divine revelation was manifested from this mouth. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ often pondered over the affairs of the Ummah. Due to his preoccupations and great responsibilities, he never found peace. He remained mostly silent and did not speak unnecessarily. From the beginning to the end of his speech, he would speak complete words and phrases, not cutting off any word from the tip of his tongue. While speaking, he used comprehensive words. As mentioned in a narration, كلامه فصل لا فضول ولا تقصیر "His speech was articulate, neither excessive nor deficient." Similarly, he spoke so deliberately that every listener could easily memorize it. Sometimes, he would repeat an important or unclear point three times. Umm al-Momineen Aisha Siddiqah رضي الله عنها said about the Beloved Prophet’s ﷺ blessed speech that he did not speak hastily, and his speech was very clear and distinct. If someone wanted to count the words of his speech, they could. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ was more eager for the well-being of his Ummah, as Allah Almighty has mentioned in the Quran. With this advice in mind, he sometimes would stick out his blessed tongue from his blessed mouth and then hold it with his pure hand, gesturing so that the listener would take the importance of the advice to heart and act upon it, thus attaining success. Similarly, in a narration, it is mentioned that a companion, Sayyiduna Sufyan bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه, asked the Beloved Prophet ﷺ, فما أكثر ما تخاف على؟ قال: فأخذ رسول اللّٰه صلى اللّٰه علیه وسلم بلسان نفسه ثم قال: ھذا "What do you find more intimidating for me?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of his tongue and said, "This."
