The Noble Prophet’s ﷺ recitation of poetry

The Noble Prophet’s ﷺ recitation of poetry

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated from the Holy Prophet ﷺ that the best words ever spoken by the poets of Arabia are the words of Labid: "الا کلّ شيْئ ما خَلا اللّٰهُ باطل" — Everything besides Allah is false.

Narration

Sayyiduna Jundub bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه narrates that once a stone hit the finger of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, due to which it became bloody. So, the Holy Prophet ﷺ recited this verse, the translation of which is: 'It is just a finger that has been harmed only to the extent of becoming bloody, and this is not in vain; rather, this pain has been inflicted in the way of Allah Almighty, for which there will be reward.' We have not heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intentionally recited any poetry from his blessed tongue during his lifetime because it was not befitting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sometimes mentioned a complete verse or a part of it by way of citation. Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه narrates that when the Holy Prophet ﷺ went to Makkah Mukarrama for Umrah al-Qada, Abdullah bin Rawaha (with a sword hanging from his neck, holding the reins of the Prophet's camel) was walking ahead and reciting these verses: 'Clear the way for him, O sons of disbelievers,' up to the words 'from his friend.' خَلُّوا بَنِي الْکُفَّارِ عَنْ سَبِيلِہ الی قولی ۔۔۔۔۔عَنْ خَلِيلِہ 'O sons of disbelievers, move aside. Leave the way of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Today, if you prevent the Holy Prophet ﷺ from coming to Makkah Mukarrama, as you did last year, we will deal with you in such a way that we will separate heads from bodies and make friend forget friend.' Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه stopped Ibn Rawaha, saying that he was reciting these verses in the Haram of Allah and in the presence of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said, 'O Umar, do not stop him. These verses are more severe than shooting arrows in their effect.'
