Final Prophet’s ﷺ practice of undergoing cupping therapy

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

Sayyiduna Ali رضي الله عنه said: The Holy Prophet ﷺ once had cupping performed and instructed me to pay the fee for it, so I fulfilled the payment.

Narration

Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه says that the Holy Prophet ﷺ used to get cupping (hijama) done on the veins of his neck and shoulders, and he usually used to do it on the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the month. Someone asked Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه about the issue of payment for cupping, whether it is permissible or not. He said that Abu Tayba had performed cupping for the Holy Prophet ﷺ. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ gave him two Sa' of food (in one narration, dates are also mentioned) and interceded with his masters to reduce the tax they were responsible for. He also said that cupping is the best medicine. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The best thing with which you treat yourselves is cupping and Qust al-Bahri.' Qust al-Bahri, also known as Qust al-Adhfar, is named after a city called Adhfar. It is white in color and less hot. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه says that the Holy Prophet ﷺ called a cupper who performed cupping for him. The Holy Prophet ﷺ asked him about his daily pay, and he said three Sa'. The Holy Prophet ﷺ reduced it by one Sa' and gave him payment for the cupping.
