Rasoolullah’s ﷺ blessed gravy

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله تعالٰى عنه reports: “The Noble Prophet ﷺ asked his family for food. They replied, ‘We have nothing except vinegar.’ He ﷺ asked for the vinegar to be brought, and while eating it, he ﷺ remarked, ‘What an excellent condiment vinegar is! What an excellent condiment vinegar is!’”

Narration

The Beloved Prophets ﷺ generally consumed vinegar. Its virtues are mentioned in many Hadith. In Arabia, date vinegar was common, while in our country (Pakistan), grape vinegar and sugarcane vinegar are widely used. Abu Sayeed رضي الله عنه narrates that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: 'Use olive oil for food and for massage, as it is the oil of a blessed tree.' Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه narrates that the Holy Prophet ﷺ also liked pumpkin. Once, food was brought to the Holy Prophet ﷺ when he went to a gathering (the narrator is unsure of the occasion) which included pumpkin. Since I knew he liked it, I would search for the pieces of pumpkin and place them before him. Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah رضي الله عنه narrates that I cooked a pot of food for the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Since the Beloved Prophet ﷺ preferred shank meat, I offered him one shank. He then asked for another, and I offered it. He then asked for a third, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a goat only has two shanks.' The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you had remained silent, I would have continued asking, and shanks would have continued to come out of the pot.' Sayyiduna Yusuf رضي الله عنه narrates that I once saw the Holy Prophet ﷺ take a piece of bread, place a date on it, and say: 'This is a gravy,' and then he ate it. It is known that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also ate chicken. Other Hadith mention his preference for meat and sweet things. The practice of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and his companions was that when they found something, they would eat it and thank Allah, and when they found nothing, they would be patient. Allama Ibn al-Jawzi wrote that some ignorant Sufis, even when food is available, eat very little and consume very little oily food so that their bodies become dry, and they wear wool clothes to inflict hardship on themselves and avoid drinking cold water. But this was not the practice of the Holy Prophet ﷺ nor his companions. They would remain hungry when they found nothing and eat when they found something. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ liked meat and also ate chicken and liked sweet things and drank sweet and cold water.
