Hadith

Translation

Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib رضي الله عنه said: When the Holy Prophet ﷺ would lie down to rest, he would place his right hand under his right cheek and recite this supplication: " رَبِّ قِنِي عَذَابَکَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَکَ " O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day of Resurrection.

Narration

Sayyiduna Hudhaifa رضي الله عنه says that when the Holy Prophet ﷺ would lie down on his bed, he would recite: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانًا بَعْدَمَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ. Sayyidah Aisha رضي الله عنها says that when the Holy Prophet ﷺ would lie down on his bed, he would join his hands together as in supplication, blow on them, and recite Surah Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas) three times, and then wipe his entire body with his hands, from head to toe, wherever his hands could reach. He would do this three times, starting from his head, then his face and the front part of his body, and then the rest of his body. Sayyiduna Abu Qatada رضي الله عنه says that if the Holy Prophet ﷺ would camp somewhere late at night, he would lie down on his right side and rest. And if the stay was in the morning, he would raise his right arm and rest his head on his hand. Imam Nawawi عَلَیْہِ رَحْمَۃُ اللّٰہِ said: 'The scholars say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would raise his blessed hand and place his blessed head on it so that he would not fall into deep sleep and miss the morning prayer or its early time.' Allama Mulla Ali Qari عَلَیْہِ رَحْمَۃُ اللّٰہِ says: 'Meaning, when the Holy Prophet ﷺ would stop somewhere during his travels before sahr, he would lie down on his right side to give rest to his body. And when he would stop before dawn, he would raise his hand and place his blessed head on it so that sleep would not overcome him.' The way the Holy Prophet ﷺ traveled... He is a Prophet, and a Prophet's heart is awake, his eyes sleep, but even then, how much care he took about the prayer that he would not rest in a state in which there was fear of missing the prayer. Surely, this action of his is for our education. The famous commentator, great Hadith scholar, Hakim al-Ummah Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan عَلَیْہِ رَحْمَۃُ اللّٰہِ says: 'When the Holy Prophet ﷺ would camp somewhere during his travels, he would lie down on his right side with the intention of sleeping, as was his constant practice, that the direction of his bed would be towards the direction of the grave, he would place his right hand under his right cheek and lie on his right side, because lying in this way does not bring negligent sleep, and it is easy to wake up at night.'
