Nabiyyullah’s ﷺ blessed pillow

Nabiyyullah’s ﷺ blessed pillow

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

It is narrated from Sayyidatuna Aishah رضي الله تعالٰى عنها that she said: The pillow upon which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recline was made of leather and stuffed with palm fibers.

Narration

The pillow on which the Beloved Prophet ﷺ used to lean on was also made of leather and stuffed with dates. In short, simplicity was evident in everything. Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah رضي الله عنه said that he saw the Beloved Prophet ﷺ leaning on a pillow placed on his left side. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Aas رضي الله عنه said that the Beloved Prophet ﷺ never ate while leaning on a pillow. Scholars have identified four ways of leaning while eating, all of which are considered undesirable: (1) Leaning on either side. (2) Leaning on one hand. (3) Sitting cross-legged and leaning against a mound or something similar. (4) Sitting leaning against a wall or a pillow. These four postures are considered to indicate arrogance and pride, whereas the Sunnah is to sit leaning towards the food.
