صحیح بخاری (حدیث 5892)It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه that the Noble Prophet ﷺ said: “Act against the polytheists—grow the beard and trim the mustache.” Whenever Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه performed Hajj or Umrah, he would grasp his beard with his hand, and whatever exceeded the handful, he would trim.
Ibn Asakir also narrated this narration of Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyab in these words: كان اسود اللحیه حسن الشعر "His beard was black and beautiful." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umaro bin al-As رضي الله عنه have narrated: ان رسول اللّٰه صلى اللّٰه علیه وسلم كان یاخذ من لحیته من عرضھا و طولھا "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to trim his beard equally in length and width." It was the Sunnah of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ to groom his beard and he would also instruct his Companions to do the same. Therefore, it was the practice of the Companions to trim their beards beyond the length of a fist. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنه used to trim his beard appropriately after performing Hajj or Umrah. It is narrated about him: قبض على لحیته فما فضل اخذه "He would take his beard in his fist and cut whatever exceeded it." Ubaidullah bin Utbah narrates that a Majusi came to the Beloved Prophet ﷺ with a shaved beard and long mustache. The Beloved Prophet ﷺ asked him, "What is this?" He replied, "This is our religion." The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said, "In our religion, we shorten the mustache and lengthen the beard." The hair on the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ head and beard was black. However, some of his hair turned white in his last years. The hair on the upper side of his chin was white, and there were very few white hairs on the rest of his head and beard, which turned white in his last days before his veiling from this world. In this regard, Sayyiduna Wahab bin Abu Juhaifah رضي الله عنه narrates: رایت النبى صلى اللّٰه علیه وسلم ورایت بیاضا من تحت شفته السفلى العنفقة "I saw the Beloved Prophet ﷺ and I saw few white hairs under his lower lip." Different numbers of white hairs have been mentioned in various Seerah books. Hazrat Abdullah bin Busr's hadith suggests that there were no more than ten white hairs, as he used the word "few." Ibn Sa'd's narration states that there were not even twenty white hairs in his beard, and Hazrat Hamid pointed to his chin and said that there were seventeen white hairs. Allama Balqini has compiled all these narrations. All the narrations indicate that the number of white hairs was not more than twenty. Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه, speaking about the whiteness of the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ hair, said: لیس فى راسه ولحیته عشرون شعرة بیضاء "There were not more than twenty white hairs on his head and beard." Where the Companions have mentioned the number of white hairs of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ, they have also pointed out the places where the whiteness appeared. These were two places: one was between the lip and chin, and the other was between the eye and ear. When Qatada asked Sayyiduna Anas, the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ special servant, about the Beloved Prophet ﷺ using dye, Sayyiduna Anas replied: لا انما كان شىء فى صدغیه "No, there was some whiteness in his temples." The Companions stated that the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ beard shone like pearls. These narrations also show that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ trimmed and groomed his beard, and the Companions also followed the practice of trimming their beards beyond the length of a fist.
