صحیح بخاری (حدیث 3569)

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman asked Sayyidatuna Aisha رضي الله تعالٰى عنها about the manner of the Noble Prophet’s ﷺ (Tahajjud) prayer during the month of Ramadan. She replied: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not pray more than eleven rak‘ahs in Ramadan or in any other month. He ﷺ would first perform four rak‘ahs — do not ask about their length and beauty! Then he ﷺ would perform another four rak‘ahs — again, do not ask about their length and beauty! After that, he ﷺ would perform three rak‘ahs of Witr. I asked, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, why do you sleep before offering Witr?” He ﷺ replied, “My eyes sleep, but my heart does not sleep.”

Narration

To fathom the vast expanse and profound depths of the Beloved Prophet’s ﷺ heart is beyond human capacity. His sacred heart was the focal point of God's divine, special lights and radiances. It was the abode of the highest revelation, purer and nobler than any other heart in the universe. His heart was a wellspring of purity, tenderness, vastness, strength, piety, and cleanliness. The Beloved Prophet's ﷺ heart was ever-wakeful, not just in consciousness but also in sleep. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated that Abdullah ibn Masood said: عن عبداللّٰه بن مسعود قال ان اللّٰه نظر فى قلوب العباد فوجد قلب محمد صلى اللّٰه علیه وسلم خیر قلوب العباد فاصطفاه لنفسه فابتعثه برسالته ثم نظر فى قلوب العباد بعد قلب محمد فوجد قلوب اصحابه خیر قلوب العباد فجعلھم وزراء نبیه یقاتلون على دینه فما راى المسلمون حسنا فھو عنداللّٰه حسن وما راوا سیئا فھو عنداللّٰه سیئى "Allah Almighty looked into the hearts of humans and found the heart of Beloved Prophet ﷺ to be the best of all hearts. So, He chose him for Himself and appointed him as His Messenger. Then, after the heart of Beloved Prophet ﷺ, Allah Almighty looked into the hearts of other humans and found the hearts of his companions to be the best. Thus, He made them the ministers of His Prophet ﷺ, fighting for His religion. Whatever Muslims consider good is good in the sight of Allah, and whatever they consider evil is evil in the sight of Allah." Sheikh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlawi wrote that when someone asked Imam Asmai about the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ statement, انہ لیغان علی قلبی "Sometimes a burden descends upon my heart," he replied: اگر از غیر قلب رسول ا للّٰه صلى اللّٰه علیه وسلم وغین اومى پرسیدید مگیفتم انچه میدانستم اما ایں جادم نتوانم زركه حقیقت آنرا جز علام الغیوب كسے نداند "If you had asked me about the heart of anyone other than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I could have answered based on my knowledge. But in this case, I cannot speak, for none but Allah Almighty knows the reality of the Beloved Prophet's ﷺ heart." Imam Darimi narrated that Jibril came to the Beloved Prophet ﷺ and split open his chest. قال ابو محمد وكیع یعنى شدیدا "This is a strong heart with two ears that hear and two eyes that see. Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ, is the Messenger of Allah, the last of the Prophets عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ, he is the gatherer. (O Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ) Your character is firm, your tongue is truthful, and your soul is at peace." The Beloved Prophet's ﷺ heart was the strongest and most robust among all the prophets. It was the first heart that God entrusted with His secrets, and through this heart, He guided other hearts towards His knowledge.
