شمائل ترمذی (حدیث 114)Sayyiduna Iyas narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwaʿ رضي الله تعالٰى عنه, who said: Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله تعالٰى عنه used to tie his lower garment up to the middle of his shin and said, “This is how my master, the Noble Prophet ﷺ, wore his lower garment.”
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'On the Day of Judgment, Allah will not look upon with mercy the one who drags his garment out of pride.' Whoever drags his garment below his ankles out of pride, Allah will not look upon him with mercy on the Day of Judgment. However, if there is no intention of pride or if there is a necessity to lower one's garment, then there is no harm in it. Sayyiduna Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه also narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah will not look upon with mercy on the Day of Judgment the one who drags his garment out of pride.' Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه saw a man passing by dragging his cloak. He called him and said, 'Alas for you! Do you not desire that Allah look upon you with mercy on the Day of Judgement?' He replied, 'Of course, I need the mercy of the Lord.' He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever drags his cloak out of pride, Allah will not look upon him with mercy on the Day of Judgment."' This advice had such an effect on the young man that he never again dragged his cloak below his ankles for the rest of his life. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه said that the Seal of the Prophets ﷺ said: 'There are three types of people whom Allah will neither speak to on the Day of Judgment, nor look upon with mercy, nor purify, but rather there will be a painful punishment for them.' He repeated this three times. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! They are indeed ruined. Who are they?' He said, 'He who drags his garment out of pride, he who shows off his good deeds, and he who sells his goods by taking a false oath.'
