شمائل ترمزی (حدیث 34)Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله تعالٰى عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever has hair should honor it — by washing it, applying oil to it, and combing it.”
This hadith prohibits constantly straightening and oiling the hair because many harms result from it. Allama Munawi states in Fath al-Qadir: This hadith prohibits combing the hair daily because it is the practice of non-Arabs (Ajami) and worldly people. 'Ghibban' (غبا) means doing it every other day, which is the Sunnah. A man who has hair on his head should not oil and comb it daily, constantly engaging in it; rather, he should do it sometimes and not do it sometimes, doing it one day and not the next. Khawaja Hasan Basri says that it should be done once a week. The purpose of this prohibition is that a person should not become so preoccupied with outward adornment that he forgets his Lord. Women are exempt from this ruling; they may part and braid their hair daily if they wish. Similarly, if a man combs his beard daily, there is no harm in it.
