The Mercy to the Worlds’s ﷺ manner of eating

Daily Life of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ

Hadith

Translation

Sayyiduna Kaʿb bin Malik رضي الله عنه said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating with three fingers, and after finishing the meal, he ﷺ licked his blessed fingers.”

Narration

The Holy Prophet ﷺ used to eat with three fingers. It is explicitly mentioned in Hadith that he ﷺ mostly ate with three fingers. This is because arrogant people eat with one finger, and greedy people eat with five fingers, even pushing food into their mouths with the help of their palms. Therefore, the balanced way is to eat with three fingers and to lick them after finishing the meal. This is because one does not know in which part of the food the blessing lies. Is the blessing in the food that has been eaten? Or in what is on the fingers? Or in what remains in the dish? Or in the morsel that fell down? Therefore, one should try to obtain blessings from every possible source. Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalani states: 'It is Sunnah to lick the fingers after eating before wiping or washing them.' It is mentioned in Sahih Muslim: 'He should lick his hand before wiping it, so that the blessing is preserved and the fingers are cleaned.' He should not lick them during the meal because doing so would make the food unappetizing. In a Hadith, it is mentioned that he should either lick them himself or have someone else lick them. Therefore, whoever believes in the blessing should have someone who does not find it unpleasant lick them, such as his son, servant, or wife, etc., who love him and find it pleasing.
